5 Myths about Recruiting & Staffing Agencies

Since our business spans over twenty years of recruiting quality candidates for employers, we’ve heard all sorts of misconceptions about employment/staffing agencies and recruiting. What’s fascinating is how these myths keep evolving. In the early stages of the industry, there were many assumptions around the staffing industry. Now, within the last ten years, we’ve noted that once people have a negative experience, the tall tales and myths begin to form.

Here are the top five myths about Recruiters and Staffing Agencies that on a whole are not true.

• Recruiters Are Rude and Unresponsive – This general statement makes us cringe when we hear/read it.  Not all recruiters are like this.  Not even close.  Although a candidate may encounter a bad situation in their recruiting process, that doesn’t make the entire industry bad.  Our suggestion is to partner with firms or recruiters who are reputable.

• Recruiters are expensive – This assumption is also a farce.  Like any service, some can be costly, but there are also staffing services that can be cost-effective.  There are many benefits to hiring a recruiting and staffing agency that can ultimately save an employer and candidate a significant amount of time and money. Before a person can weigh the costs of anything, they need to understand the offer.

• Staffing agencies are only for temp or entry-level positions – It boggles the mind how this one misconception on staffing agencies has lasted decades.  Still, old perceptions are hard to break for the non-believers.  Recruiters come in all shapes and sizes, specializing in varied industries.  Finding the right employee at any level is hard work, but it can be done.  Find a quality recruiting partner and see where the possibilities lead.

• Why use a recruiter when there are so few jobs? Because that’s when you’re networking really counts!  If your employer, you may have a few jobs to fill, but it’s critically important to get the right fit, isn’t it?  And if you’re a candidate, you should always try to connect with industry recruiters who just might be able to help.

• Recruiters Don’t Care About Creating Long-Term Relationships – Well, that’s simply not true.  This mentality may be true for some firms, but not us.  Reputable recruiters know the value of a long-term relationship.  Most of our clients are repeat customers. In fact, 80 percent of our clients are repeat customers.  How’s that for long-term?

In any business, it comes down to the relationships and reputations that you build.  Staffing agencies and recruiting in total is a service industry.  If you come across a situation or several where you find a staffing agency or recruiter’s practices in question, find another one.  In the end you’ll find with the right partner, great things can happen.
